  • Nothing is sent until you confirm

You choose which files to attach and review them before anything leaves your device.

  • Not a diagnosis

It explains a document you already had. Decisions about your health stay with your doctor.

  • Twelve free tools

DICOM viewer, converter, anonymiser and validator. No account, nothing to install.

This is what changes

What your report says

8 mm thyroid nodule in the right lobe, isoechoic, regular margins, no microcalcifications. EU-TIRADS 3.

What it means

A small 8-millimetre lump on the right side of your thyroid. Its edges are smooth, it is the same shade as the tissue around it, and none of the warning signs are there. EU-TIRADS 3 is the low-risk category: the usual next step is to look again later, not to operate.

Illustrative example. Your explanation is written from your own report and your own question.

See more examples and the four steps

Three minutes, start to finish

You do not need to know anything about medical imaging. You just need your report or your images to hand.

  1. Upload what they gave you

A photo of the report, a PDF, a DICOM file or the whole ZIP from the hospital. Several files at once if you need to.

  2. Tell us what worries you

One line is enough. That question is what the explanation is built around, so be specific.

  3. Read the explanation

In a few minutes, in your language, saved in your dashboard so you can reread it before your appointment or show it to your family.

What this is not

We would rather say it on the front page than in the small print. If you are looking for any of these, this is not the place.

  • It is not a diagnosis or a second medical opinion. It does not replace your doctor or your radiologist.
  • It is not a medical device and carries no CE marking as one.
  • It does not read your images looking for findings: it explains what your report already says and what your data shows.
  • It is no use in an emergency. If you have symptoms that frighten you, call your country’s emergency services.

What happens to your files

It is the question people ask most and the one that almost never gets answered with numbers. Here are ours.

  • Deleted after 90 days

The files you upload and the explanation generated from them are deleted automatically 90 days after the request. Ask us to delete them sooner and we will.

  • Encrypted and yours alone

They are held in private storage, encrypted in transit and at rest, and reachable only from your account.

  • They train no model

They are not sold to third parties and never cross-referenced with visit analytics.

  • With your explicit consent

This is health data, a special category under Article 9 GDPR. The legal basis is your consent, and you can withdraw it at any time.

And first of all, the free tools

If what you need is to open the hospital CD, turn a DICOM into a JPG or strip the patient details before sending it on, you do not have to pay for anything. They run entirely in your browser: the files are never uploaded.

Who is behind this

ExplainMyScan is run by one person, not a medical team, and you should know that before using it. I am not a doctor: what I know how to do is make an AI system read a document and say it back in language people understand. Clinical decisions stay with your doctor, and this exists so you walk into that appointment knowing what to ask.

About me, and why this exists

Frequently asked questions

What is a DICOM file?

DICOM is the standard format for medical imaging. It is the file a hospital burns onto a CD or lets you download from its portal, and it holds the image together with the details of the study and the patient. It usually has a .dcm extension, though very often it has no extension at all.

Do I need an account to use the tools?

No. The viewer, converter, anonymiser, inspector, metadata viewer and validator are free and work without signing up. An account is only needed to request an AI explanation.

Can I upload a photo of a paper report?

Yes. A clear photo of the report works as well as a PDF. If you also have the images in DICOM, upload them: the more complete the study, the more context the explanation has.

What does it cost?

There is a 24-hour trial for a fraction of the price, then a monthly subscription you can cancel whenever you want. The DICOM tools are always free, subscription or not.

Is the explanation reviewed by a doctor?

No. It is written by an automated system and does not pass through a healthcare professional. That is why it is informational and not a diagnosis: it exists so you understand your document and arrive at your appointment with your questions ready.

Your report, in language that makes sense

Upload the study, say what worries you, and read what it actually says. No medical vocabulary, no looking up every term yourself.
